Storage

Block Storage

Add persistent storage to your Glesys KVM servers, managed separately from your server resources. Expand volumes, move storage between servers, and retain your data even when a server is deleted. Choose from three performance tiers: Capacity, Balanced, and Velocity.

Why Choose Glesys?

Sustainable data centers

We use renewable energy and work to extend the lifespan of our hardware. We also recover excess heat from our data centers and supply it to local district heating networks.

Transparent pricing

Choose the performance tier and storage capacity that fit your needs. Performance up to the specified IOPS limit is included in the price, with no separate charge per I/O operation.

Manage your Block Storage volumes

Expand storage without server downtime

Increase the size of your Block Storage volumes as your applications grow, without shutting down your KVM server.

Move storage between servers

Detach a volume from one KVM server and attach it to another without copying your data to a new volume.

Keep your data when a server is deleted

Your Block Storage volumes and their data remain available even after a KVM server is deleted, ready to be attached to another server.

Attach and detach volumes on running servers

Add or remove storage volumes without shutting down your KVM server, on supported operating systems.

Manage storage and server resources separately

With Glesys Block Storage, you can manage storage independently from your KVM server's local system disk. Choose the capacity and performance tier that fits your needs, expand volumes as your data grows, and move storage between servers without creating new volumes or copying your data. Each volume appears as a separate disk in your operating system, giving you control over how your storage is configured and used.

Frequently asked questions

What is Block Storage?
expand_more
Glesys Block Storage provides persistent storage volumes that are managed separately from your KVM server's local system disk. You can expand volumes, detach them, and move them between virtual servers as your storage needs change.
What is the difference between Block Storage and Local Storage?
expand_more

Unlike a server's local system disk, Block Storage volumes are managed independently from the virtual server. You can detach a volume, attach it to another KVM server, and retain your data even if the original server is deleted.

Which performance tier should I choose?
expand_more

Capacity is suitable when you primarily need storage capacity at a lower cost.

Balanced is suitable for general-purpose storage with higher read and write performance requirements.

Velocity is the highest performance tier and is designed for applications with high I/O requirements.

How is Block Storage priced?
expand_more
Pricing is based on the provisioned capacity of your volume and the selected performance tier, rather than the amount of data stored. Performance up to the tier's IOPS limits is included in the price.
Does volume size affect IOPS limits?
expand_more
No. IOPS limits are determined by the selected performance tier, regardless of volume size. These limits represent maximum performance, not guaranteed IOPS.
Can I expand an existing volume?
expand_more
Yes. You can expand a Block Storage volume while your KVM server is running. After expansion, you may need to extend the partition or file system in your operating system to use the additional capacity.
Can I reduce the size of a volume?
expand_more
No. Block Storage volumes cannot be reduced in size. To use a smaller volume, create a new one, copy your data, and verify the copy before deleting the original volume.
Can the same volume be attached to multiple servers?
expand_more
No. A Block Storage volume can only be attached to one KVM server at a time. You can detach it from one server and attach it to another.
What happens to my volume if I delete the server?
expand_more
When you delete a KVM server, its Block Storage volumes are automatically detached and retained with their data. You can attach them to another server. Billing continues until you delete the volumes themselves.
Does Block Storage support snapshots and backups?
expand_more
Block Storage snapshots are not currently supported, and Glesys Backup does not cover Block Storage volumes. You are responsible for backing up your data using a suitable backup solution.
Where is Block Storage available?
expand_more
Glesys Block Storage is available for KVM servers in our data center in Falkenberg, Sweden.
